First attempt was not so good. I had covered the table and got it all set up, put him in the chair and he fell off. Didn't occur to me that he cant sit in a normal chair yet. And our chairs are kinda small I think. So he was screaming and upset. I thought maybe showing him the paint would distract him from crying so I put some on the table and put his fingers in it. He FREAKED out! He is a very clean little guy so then I was worried he wouldn't like it at all. I cleaned him up and gave him a sandwich.
Second attempt about an hour later was much better. I sat him on my lap and showed him how to dip his fingers in the color then put them on the paper. He was timid at first, only using one finger and looking at me like "um, I'm making a mess, is this ok?!" but then he got over it and was smearing it all over. He kept saying more more. He painted a few pages then I washed his hands again. (The paint is totally washable but that doesn't mean I want to wash everything in sight.) So he was saying more more more still so I sat him in the chair by himself (he would NOT stand or kneel) so I could get some pictures and let him do a couple more pages.
I think next time we'll do it outside so when he gets off the paper I dont have to worry as much. I hope its warm for a few more weeks. He had a lot of fun! Here are some pics.
So careful at first.
Round 1 pictures. The get progressively messier as he got more comfortable with it. I tried to take individual pics but the flash made them look weird. My favorite is the yellow/blue/red one in the center. I showed him to put his whole hand down and of course he loved to smack the table over and over.
He liked rubbing his hands together when they were all messy. Also rubbed his face. Just taught him to actually smile at the camera so he's hamming it up.
I also got food coloring (for the playdough and water bottle activity) and sidewalk chalk, hoping to try them soon as well.
Oh, and the blog I mentioned is playathomemom3.blogspot.com Its really cool.
